Nothing Man

I know this video’s not the usual mtv or style show, but I believe it is a moment to take during these moments. At the very least, let me share with you a favorite song of mine, Nothing Man, from Springsteen’s album The Rising.

One line that runs over and over in my head: You want courage? I’ll show you courage you can understand…

record for being hesitant

We know how society rewards extroverts, but I’m interested in how society punishes the quiet. Those alone. Are those alone, sitting or eating alone, lonely?

I know what you’d say.

I avoid the crowd, not just because we all try to when we can, rather because I cannot hear myself when too many people are about. I often think this is the way with people as they grow, yet why is it those who are alone are not thought of as sensible, thinking individuals, and are likely to be perceived to be lonely? Are you aware when you are alone? Isn’t it good to be aware, conscious?

One of the few things I hold as a dear lesson in adulthood is how to eat alone. I’ve eaten alone very few times in my life, and now that I’m doing it more, I understand why food taste different when eaten with company.

The tongue knows the taste of familiarity better than taste itself. The heart?

Strength in a living stone

Jamie Livingston took a polaroid a day for every day of his life between 1979 and 1997, right up to his death in October 1997. Against crashing the site one more time, I still say go visit his work, but do it gently (traffic may work against you now that the world has taken an interest). And for those of us needing to believe art is life and life is not or is - here is that last photo, 25/10/97.

Strength

Out of 6000 more. More that his friends Hugh and Betsy Reid scanned through to bring us his work and art, and life.

May the image burn yours stronger, clearer.

Singapore boleh!

We won Pedra Branca! We are officially 13km² larger! For the bonus prize, we won one lighthouse and a shitload of bird poop. Malaysia got the bunch of rocks. The other bunch of rocks that are only visible during low tide goes to whoever wins the territorial waters.

I cannot believe that it took almost 30 years to decide on the fate of a bunch of rocks and some bird shit.

To best make use of our newly won territory, I think the government should invest in researching how to use bird shit as an alternative energy source. They can slap on a bird shit tax, or just up the GST again by 2%. I am sure we will grumble, but we can accommodate all government initiatives by, for example, buying house brand products or shopping at Sheng Siong instead of Cold Storage.

Zelda

I have often told you that I am that little fish who swims about under a shark and, I believe, lives indelicately on its offal. Anyway, that is the way I am. Life moves over me in a vast black shadow and I swallow whatever it drops with relish, having learned in a very hard school that one cannot be both a parasite and enjoy self-nourishment without moving in worlds too fantastic for even my disordered imagination to people with meaning.
